Adapting
Project HISTORY is a U.S. Department of Education-funded Teaching American
History grant award recipient. Utica
City School District is the lead agency which submitted the proposal in
collaboration with Dr. Jim Carroll of Syracuse University’s Maxwell
School. It is a three-year project
with two additional years contingent upon federal funding. The first cadre of 25 American history
(grades 5, 7, 8, & 11) teachers from seven public school districts in
Central New York will meet in August of 2010 for a three-day workshop. During the next two and one half years,
these teachers will meet regularly to attend presentations and visit
museums and historical sites in the area.
American History faculty from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School
and Lemoyne College will give presentations on relevant topics throughout
the project. They will also meet to
receive instruction on integrating technology into their American history
curriculum through WebQuests, PowerPoint lessons as well as Adapting
Project HISTORY’s unique internet problem solving and Constitutional Law
applications. Participants will also
have access to a listserv to stay in touch with the directors of the
project as well as with their fellow teachers. Teachers will be expected to create
on-line lessons for use in their classes to help their students on required
American History and Social Studies tests.
Grade-appropriate reading materials will also be provided to the
teachers. Teachers receive
in-service professional development stipends for their attendance in the
summer, afterschool and weekend sessions.
Substitute reimbursements will be made to districts for any
school-year release day workshops.
During the February break of 2013, a second cadre of 25 teachers
will start the program. If you have
