Introduction:

Imagine not having a kitchen faucet in your house!  Imagine walking outside and seeing children with AK-47s walking around!  Imagine going to school and sitting on a dirt floor all day!  The people of South Sudan have been dealing with many of these conflicts on a daily basis.  Many people from around the world are not even aware of the crisis that is forcing millions of Sudanese to flee their country and become refugees.

TASK:

You will create a poster explaining one of the major problems occurring in South Sudan. You will be assigned one of the problems, identify the causes, gather evidence, evaluate the policy and explain a possible solution to that specific problem.

PROCESS:

Step 1:

You will be put into groups of 4 and be assigned one of the problems from South Sudan: Lack of Water, War, or Limited Educational Resources.

You and your group will follow the steps to gather the evidence, evaluate the current policies, and provide at least one solution to the problem.

“Editor-in-Chief”/ Leader - This student will lead the research by guiding the other members to the web pages. He/She will assign information from the resources and collect information that will be used to complete the worksheets.

“Reporters”/ Writers - These students will take notes on information gathered by the group members. They will be responsible for completing the PPA worksheets.

“General Manager”/ Task master 1 - This student will keep the group on their path. He/She will assign information from the resources and collect information that will be used to complete the worksheets. This person will assist in the research, keep the others on task with the assignment, and will assign class work/homework to make sure the deadlines are met.

“Art Editor” / Task master 2 – This student will cover all aspects of layout, design, and visuals. He/She will discuss design and layout ideas with the other group members and will oversee the designing of the poster.

**All group members are required to contribute to the completion of the worksheets AND the completion of the poster.**

Your group will use the websites provided in the Resources section of the document to conduct your research & to complete the following 6 worksheets.

Step 2:

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM:

Worksheet 1: Defining the Social Problem

GATHERING THE EVIDENCE:

Worksheet 2: Gathering the Evidence

IDENTIFYING CAUSES:

Worksheet 3: Identifying Causes

EVALUATE THE POLICY:

Worksheet 4: Evaluate the Policy

DEVELOP SOLUTIONS:

Worksheet 5: Develop Solutions

SELECTING THE BEST SOLUTION:

Worksheet 6: Select the Best Solution

Step 3:

After completing the 6 worksheets, your group will create a poster that raises awareness about your specific Sudanese problem.  Your poster must identify the problem, show evidence of the problem and its causes through text and visuals, and offer one solution to the current problem.

Be sure your poster includes:

ü The assigned problem in large block or bubble letters

ü Evidence of the problem using words and pictures (pictures can either be drawn or printed from the computer)

ü One solution the President of the United States can do that is agreed upon with your group that is clearly labeled

ü Color, neatness, effort, creativity
