Internet Safety
P.S. 280Q
Mr. Catano
Have you ever felt unsafe on the internet? If you have then, I’m here to tell you that YOU have the ability to be SAFE and make GOOD choices while on the internet. As 5th graders you will teach others what it takes to be safe on the internet and ways to do so.
Students will participate in a WebQuest to learn more about internet safety. You will also work as a team to share what you’ve learned. Over the course of 5 lessons you and your team will create a visual presentation (Google Slide) where you will teach others reasons why and how we need to stay safe on the internet. As a culminating activity, you will present your Google slide presentations to be graded using a rubric.
Here are some key ideas to remember as you work together:
● Learn about internet safety and why it’s so important from the resources below. Be sure to take notes on the important things you would like to share.
● Create a Google Slide that is visually appealing, easy to read and that contains factual and relevant information about the topic; internet safety.
● Be sure that all members of the team are active participants and do their fair share.
PROCESS/RESOURCES
Students will be placed in groups of 3-4 students for this assignment. All students will share their presentation towards the end of the allotted time. Roles for students include:
1. Researcher
2. Designer
(presentation)
3. Team leader
Once you have a group and have an assigned role you will use the PPA process (see below)
Here are the six steps of the PPA Process:
1. Define the Problem
2. Gather evidence
3. Identify the Cause
4. Evaluate the Existing Policy
5. Develop a Solution
6. Select the Best Solution
Day 1 & 2: Define the Problem & Gather evidence
● Begin by researching Internet Safety. Only use the websites provided by the teacher.
● https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=internet+safety
● https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/internetsafetyforkids/
Here are some guiding questions:
● What are ways that the internet is unsafe?
● How can we teach internet safety to children?
Day 3 : Identify the Cause
Think about why we need to teach internet safety to the public.
● What might happen if we didn’t?
● Will this problem persist in the future or dissipate?
Day 4: Evaluate the existing policy
Think about what we already have in place to teach kids about internet safety.
Is it effective? If not, what can we do differently to improve the effectiveness?
Day 5: Develop a Solution
As a group, create a Google presentation or video containing possible solutions for improving how we teach or introduce internet safety. Be sure to clearly explain each one of the solutions and use the information you have researched in the previous days. Presentation will be graded based on the rubric below.
