Introduction

The word democracy contains the Greek root demos which means "people." In our democratic society, the people can participate in their government. They can influence the public policies that are enacted.

The Public Policy Analyst (PPA) is designed to help students to maximize their participation in government as responsible citizens. As a public policy analyst, you and your class will develop the following policy skills, learning how to:

  • Identify the nature of a social problem
  • Gather evidence to support the existence of the problem
  • Determine the causes and factors contributing to the problem
  • Evaluate the existing policy
  • Develop public policy alternatives
  • Determine the best public policy solution to the problem

In addition to policy skills, you will also be learning how to effectively use the Internet to gather information, engage in collaborative problem solving, and communicate with knowledgeable people regarding your public policy issue. As you complete your public policy analysis, there will be a variety of options for producing and displaying your final electronic portfolio. These technology skills will help you now as a student and after you graduate.

Now, it is time to consider the question,

Would you like to become a public policy analyst?
