Parents Involvement in Schools

Finding the best Solution to this Matter.

P.S. 28

New York, NY

Teresa Marte 3rd Grade

Introduction:

One of the biggest problems nowadays in schools throughout New York City, our school P.S. 28 included, is parental involvement.  In our school this is one of the major issues, there is a lack of parental involvement in the education process.  Due to this problem, these are some of the results among others:  poor students academic performance, student behavior problems and low student morale, etc.

As part of P.S. 28 educational community we should find the best effective ways for parents to be more involve in their children’s educational experience and progress.

Task:

Ø  As a class we will prepare an oral presentation, and we will present it to parents during open school night.  In our presentation we will explain our concerns about the lack of low parental involvement in our school.  In our presentation we will provide parents with the following information.

1. Help parents understand the importance of parental involvement.

2. Gather evidence from other schools that benefit more from parental involvement and be ready to share findings with parents in our school.

3. Interview students from our school and have them share about what difference do they think it will make if parents were more involved in their children’s education?

4. List several possible ideas to help parents understand different ways how they can participate in our school.

5. Let parents know how appreciated they are in our school.

Process:

Steps One:  We will review and incorporate in our projects the six steps in The Public Policy Analyst:

v  Worksheet 1:

v  Step 2:  Gather the Evidence.

v  Worksheet 2:

v  Step 4:  Evaluate a Policy.

v  Worksheet 4:

v  Step 5:  Develop Solutions.

v  Worksheet 5:

v  Step 6:  Select the Best Solution.

v  Worksheet 6:

Step Two:  After each group is familiar with the PPA, we will break up into five groups in the classroom; each group will be in charge of creating the informational notes for each grade (3rd grade) in our building.

Step Three:  We will speak to the Principal therefore we can organize a school assembly and have all the students in the school learn about our new project.
