The Court should side with Steirer in this case. The government (through the
public schools) cannot compel citizens to perform work against their wishes.
Argument #2
The Court should rule with the school district (Bethlehem) and allow the school
to require from its students, 60 hours of unpaid services to approved
organizations in order to be allowed to graduate. "The stated goal of the
Program is to "help students acquire life skills and learn about the
significance of rendering services to their communities . . . [and] gain a sense
of worth and pride as they understand and appreciate the functions of community
organizations."
