The Patriot Act—

Helpful or Harmful?

 

 

The American Republic was established in 1776 with the nation’s first constitution adopted in 1787.  The Preamble of the Constitution states:

 

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

 

Since the eighteenth century, Americans have participated in the development of a society and culture that has promoted peace and prohibited violence.   However, Americans in the twenty-first century experienced first-hand what happens when peace is suffocated and violence storms the nation.  War was waged on America on September 11, 2001 at the hands of a foreign terrorism group known as Al Qaeda.  A current policy that was enacted to protect America from domestic acts of terrorism was the Patriot Act.  Many questions have surfaced regarding the constitutionality of this act.

I.     Research the history of terrorism in America in the late twentieth and early

        twenty-first centuries

II.   Examine the background, evidence, and causes of the necessity of the 

        Patriot Act, as well as analyze the constitutionality of the act

III.  Determine and defend your position in the form of a written position paper

IV.  Collaborate with your group to prepare for debate

This webquest was designed to better familiarize students with the terrorism and the role terrorism played in the creation of the Patriot Act. A second objective was to teach students about the impact of the Patriot Act on the lives of American citizens.  Students are expected to gain a better understanding of how the American nation handled issues, such as terrorism, in response to the needs of both the nation itself and the needs of the citizens.
