STOP THE NOISE

Introduction:

Have you ever wondered if students behave and conduct themselves in the hallways at other schools, as you do here at JFK ?  Have you ever wondered why the noise levels in the hallways at JFK are so loud?   Maybe you are part of the problem but, you don’t realize it….

As you read and listen to the song “The Noise” by Jessie Daniels try to figure out ways to deal with noise issues in our hallways. Other students often witness the screaming, yelling and pushing in the halls.  Acts of inappropriate behavior towards others whether verbal or physical can often lead to undesirable consequences.  It also can give a negative first impression of you the students at JFK to a person entering the building for the first time.  How do you think people view you as a result of your behavior or your classmates behavior?

The Noise by Jessie Daniels

Here we go

One more time

Out the door to face the crowd

I can't think straight or concentrate

Surrounded by the sounds

Of a world that deafening

Above everything

I hear your voice

Coming through the static

It's so automatically loud and clear

It's you

And things that used to matter

Suddenly just scatter

When you break through

The Noise

I don't know why

I don't know how

It's so easy to forget

And fall back in

So I start listening

To something that was said

In a world that's deafening

Above everything

CHORUS

Through the Noise

Everything disappears

Task:

We need you~ “The Students of JFK”  to step up and help us keep your hallways quiet!  We~ “The Staff at JFK” are asking you the students to make posters.  Your posters may be drawn, painted or computer graphically designed.  Your posters need to illustrate the idea of a quiet hallway.   The posters should include the following ideas: proper language and volume, appropriate physical interaction (no hugging), and maturity and respect.

  • Each class will pick 2-3 of the best posters from each class
  • Our best artists will have their photos taken and both their photos and posters will be displayed in our hallways around the school.
  • Our Faculty will be choosing one 7th and one 8th graders poster as our grand prize winner.  These students will be given a grand prize and your posters will become H.U.S.H.’s LOGO

The Process:

You now have the opportunity to have a direct hand in stopping all kinds of hall way misbehavior at JFK Middle School.  Mrs. DePaul is asking you to join her in helping more students live their lives free of noise and inappropriate behavior that can lead to unfavorable consequences for you the student.

You will be asked to develop a Poster on proper hallway behavior and conduct and how to stop it in your school.

You will complete the Six Steps of the Public Policy Analyst Model (PPA) to decide on the best public policy solution that will help prevent improper hallway behavior/conduct.

Mrs. DePaul will review the PPA structure/Poster as a class to explain to everyone in the class what a PPA is using the following link.

http://www2.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/ppae/ppae2.html

A worksheet for each of the steps of the PPA is listed below on the following links. Each worksheet has a step in the process of finding a solution to the problem. Click on each link and complete the attached worksheet. You  will use these worksheets as a guide and resource material for completing the Poster.  Make sure that you use all six steps of the PPA in your presentations.
