There is great public concern about the threat of the increasing numbers/ rise of people infected with HIV/AIDS. The New York City Dept of Health is very interested in this problem. You are now a member of a student advisory team. You have been asked, by the New York City Department of Education, to develop an advertising campaign to better inform teenagers on how HIV/AIDS is transmitted with the goal of prevention. You have a vital function. You can help save the lives of family and friends. Good Luck.

TASK

You will develop a PowerPoint presentation to inform teenage students’ of the many ways to prevent infection from HIV/AIDS.

1.                Your PowerPoint will have 10 slides minimum.

2.              In your PowerPoint you can include pictures, graphs, charts and text to develop your campaign.

3.              You will present your PowerPoint along with a 5 minute oral presentation to the NYC Dept. of Ed. (class).

4.              Your PowerPoint should include steps from the Public Policy analyst.

5.              Your PowerPoint presentation can include at least ONE slide for each PPA step

Procedure

1.                Working in groups of four you will use TIPS PPA to research the problem.  This will involve using six steps. You will read the web page and complete the worksheets linked at the bottom of each page. You will use these worksheets to complete your Power Point presentation.

2.              Use the websites provided in the hyperlinks as resources to research each step and write your findings on the worksheets provided.

A. First, define the problem

B. Second, gather evidence to support the existence of the problem.

C. Third, determine the causes of the problem.

D. Fourth, evaluate the existing policies.

E. Fifth, develop new public policies.

F. Sixth, decide which policy will provide the best solution to the problem.

3.              Use the research information you have just gathered, as well as the original ideas you have just developed, to create your power point presentation.

   4. Each group will give a five-minute oral presentation on its findings and conclusions.  The oral presentation should focus on your group’s suggested public policies and the solution you believe will best address how to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, and the effects of the disease on society. Your presentation should be informative and interesting. This will be graded by the rubrics below.

Having completed this Web Quest, you are now an expert on how to prevent the transmission of HIV/Aids.  You understand how human activities are contributing to the transmission of HIV/AIDS.  You have developed an original public policy to deal with this particular problem, and you are ready to continue thinking critically on other important scientific issues that affect our society. You have searched the internet and made an oral presentation based on your findings. You now understand the role of a public policy analyst and how effective they can be in society.
