Introduction

You are living in London in l860 and you are fortunate enough to have had an education.   You realize, however, that not all citizens in England have equal rights, especially women.  In fact, you know a brilliant young woman who has been denied entrance to medical school merely because she is a woman.  The prevailing thinking is that women are too fragile and do not have the mental and emotional strength to deal with anything of a rigorous nature and that studying will tax a woman’s brain.   You would like to examine the role of women in Victorian England and how these roles affect British society.   You would also like to propose changes to existing policies so that women could be granted the same rights and opportunities as men and you plan to work tirelessly to achieve that goal.  You feel that women can contribute to all areas of society in a positive way and are an untapped resource.   You believe that the quality of life for all levels of society will be greatly improved by the changes you will propose.

Task

You will take on one of the following roles of someone who is educated and living in l860’s London:  Newspaper Reporter, Suffragette, Peer in Parliament, Governess, Lord of an Estate.  You will use the six-step public policy analyst to identify the existing problem, gather evidence, determine causes, evaluate present policies, develop new policies, and choose the best solution to this problem. You will need to go to the specific websites provided in the resources section to help you gather your information.  You will present your findings to the class in the form of an oral presentation with an audio-visual component like a brochure, display board, poster(s), power point presentation, or role playing.  In addition, you will hand in a written policy paper including all your work, worksheets, and sources that you used.
