We Created it,

We Should Control It!

Introduction

Waste is a problem we created, which contributes to our increase in water, land and air pollution. We are drowning in oceans of our own filth and it appears that the majority of humans are not even aware of it. As an educator and resident of the city that never sleeps( New York), I intend to live a long time but, due to extremely poor environmental conditions our quality of life has and will suffer.

Example; currently 69% of the cities residents are suffering from some form of cancer, and at least 31% of the population have died due to cancer related causes.

As the situation worsens, we should ask ourselves why?  Why doesn’t the U.S. Government step in and do something about it? How can we (the citizens) help?

We can begin by 1- identifying then problem and its causes and 2- developing solutions.

Examples:

Human activities/Waste

Over Hunting/Poaching

Exploitation of Organism

                     Poor Land Use Management

TASK

You will submit a two page paper on:

v   Human effects on our environment.

v   Activities and laws concerning solutions for the problems.

v   They will use the Public Policy Analyst approach in the preparation of their report.

Your group will develop a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate the problems you researched and the solutions to the problems you have chosen.

PROCESS

The students will be working in pairs and take responsibility for their writing assignment.  In order to complete their assignments, they will use the TIPS Public Policy Analyst (PPA) method.

The PPA involves six steps:

1- Identifying the problem

2- Gathering Evidence

3- Identifying existing public policies

4- Determining existing public policies

5- Developing. solutions

6- Selecting the best solution

After completing your six page worksheets, begin writing out your report:

v   Be sure to write an outline and a draft copy of your report

v   Be sure to fully use the information developed from the worksheets in you report

v   Check to see that you describe the problem, and discuss solutions that can be developed as a public policy by government.

v   Clearly indicate the reasons why you chose the solution(s) you did.

v   All papers must be checked for correct English usage.

Your group will then develop a PowerPoint presentation. The goal of your presentation will be to illustrate the problem and show the solutions given and why your group chose one of them as the best solution to waste problems facing us.

v   Your PowerPoint should fully illustrate the problem.

v   It should include pictures of the problems caused be waste.

v   You should include slides showing your proposed solution and demonstrate why your group thinks it’s the best solution.

v   Your PowerPoint should include at least 8 slides. This includes a title slide. A slide of “credits” showing the group members may be included, but is not to be counted as part of the minimum 8 pages.
