CHINA -

MANDATE OF HEAVEN

Mrs. MedoriColumbus HS

INTRODUCTION

The year is 900 B.C. and civilizations are in their infancy.  One of the most advanced people of the time live in China under the Zhou Dynasty.  These people live under a policy known as the Mandate of Heaven.  The Zhou explained that the gods wanted them to lead; therefore they had a “divine right to rule”.

You are living in a nearby civilization.  Your leaders have heard rumors of the greatness of China.  Your queen (Queen Medori) has sent you on a diplomatic mission to visit this land, learn of their ways and bring back an evaluation of their policies.  Why is the right to rule such a strong belief in China?  Should other societies, such as the one you live in, follow their lead? Your findings will shape the way your family, friends, and neighbors live.

TASK

  • Your job as diplomatic visitors to China is to evaluate the idea of the Mandate of Heaven, using the public policy analysis steps.  The information gathered will then be used to create a Power Point presentation of at least four slides.
  • As consultants for your government you will be charged with researching China’s public policy regarding the Mandate of Heaven to discover what it is, how it came about and its effectiveness, in other words: was it a good idea?
  •  Your presentation will be delivered in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.

PROCESS

The process of completing your task is as follows:

1.    Compile Information using your notes, text and the links available to you.

2.    Fill out the worksheets for the 4 steps of policy analysis.  You can access them by clicking on the blue links below.

The 4 steps include:

Some of the questions you want to answer are:

-                     An explanation of what the divine right to rule is and how it works

-                     Why Zhou leaders used this theory

-                     Your opinion analyzing the effectiveness of the Mandate of Heaven

-                     Whether or not your society should adopt this public policy

3. Using the worksheets as a guide, design a PowerPoint presentation.  It must be at least 4 slides long.  An example of what your slides might show is:

SLIDE 1:  Identifies the problem

SLIDE 2:  Explains the causes of the problem

SLIDE 3:  Evaluates the policy

SLIDE 4:  Explain your suggestions on whether or not to implement the Mandate of Heaven policy in your own country.

4. You will present your findings by showing the PowerPoint slide show to the class.
