Introduction

Have you ever imagined someday finding the love of your life?   Have you ever imagined committing yourself for life to this person?  Imagine that you have found that special someone, “the one.”   You have been in a relationship for 6 years.   Excited, you finally decide to get married and begin to make arrangements.  You tell your family and friends.  You publish your wedding announcement in the New York Times.

You go down to the licensing office and you are denied a license.   Shocked and disappointed, you ask for a reason.   They tell you that your relationship cannot be recognized by the state because you are both of the same sex and the state constitution does not guarantee the right of marriage to another of the same sex.

Amazed, you know that movie stars like J-Lo, Dennis Rodman and Britney Spears can get married for less than 48 hrs.  But you, who are in a committed relationship that will likely NOT end in a speedy and very public divorce, have been denied because of your sexual orientation.   You decide to take this to court and fight for your rights.  You will be using the case Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a basis for your case.
