Introduction

You may have seen her remain quiet after all this time and tremble with fear when he raises his voice. You may have seen her attempt to cover her bruises with make-up and her self-esteem with the excuse that she fell down the stairs. You may even know her….

Celie, in The Color Purple, suffers both physical and mental abuse at the hand of her father and later on

continues as a victim of her own husband. Sadly, this oppressive fate of the fictional Celie is a terrible

reality for millions of women right here in the United States.

Domestic abuse is a social issue that extends across cultures and has plagued American families

throughout history, including New York City. Celie could easily be a woman living right here in the Bronx

who is someone’s mother, sister, cousin of friend. The problem occurs when families fail to admit there is

abuse and when women have no place to go for help.

You can help! You have been chosen as a member of the Head Honcho Group that advises the Mayor of New York City on various problems. You will research and develop a policy that aids victims of abuse and creates awareness among citizens of this problem.

TASK:

v     You will work in a group to research, develop and present a public policy proposal to the Mayor that addresses the issue of domestic violence in the Bronx.

v     You will create a Power Point report incorporating the results of your research and your public policy analysis.

v     In addition, each member will choose one of the following bonus tasks to complete:

1)      Create a poster to create awareness for domestic abuse to be presented at a local rally.

2)      Write a 2-minute monologue or journal entry from the perspective of a battered woman.

3)      Write a poem or song lyrics to honor a victim of domestic abuse.

v     Finally, you will present your findings in a Power Point presentation to the school community and the Mayor’s office.

Process

1.       You will work in groups of three to four.  Each member of the group will be responsible for each of the worksheets and will be responsible for four slides.

·        Identifying causes.

·        Gathering evidence.

·        Describe existing policies concerning the problem.

·        Develop solutions.

·        Select the best solution for your problem.

3.      You will use the information from the worksheets from the TIPS website to prepare a Power Point storyboard of a minimum of 12 slides.

4.      You must have a short narration to accompany the presentation of approximately 1 minute per slide. Each member of the group will be responsible for the narration of his/her slides.

5.      Each member must also choose one of the three bonus assignments. The guidelines are listed below. These will be presented along with the Power Point.

6.      The group will present their report and findings to the Mayor and the school community with a Power Point Presentation and the accompanying narration, as well as the bonus assignments.
