You may have seen her remain quiet after all this time and tremble with fear when he raises his voice. You may have seen her attempt to cover her bruises with make-up and her self-esteem with the excuse that she fell down the stairs. You may even know her….
Celie, in The Color Purple, suffers both physical and mental abuse at the hand of her father and later on
continues as a victim of her own husband. Sadly, this oppressive fate of the fictional Celie is a terrible
reality for millions of women right
here in the
Domestic abuse is a social issue that extends across cultures and has plagued American families
throughout history, including
who is someone’s mother, sister, cousin of friend. The problem occurs when families fail to admit there is
abuse and when women have no place to go for help.
You can help! You have been chosen as a member of the Head Honcho Group that advises the Mayor of New York City on various problems. You will research and develop a policy that aids victims of abuse and creates awareness among citizens of this problem.

You will work in a group to research, develop
and present a public policy proposal to the Mayor that addresses the issue of
domestic violence in the
v
You will create a Power Point report
incorporating the results of your research and your public policy analysis.
v
In
addition, each member will choose one of the following bonus tasks
to complete:
1)
Create a
poster to create awareness for domestic abuse to be presented at a local rally.
2)
Write a
2-minute monologue or journal entry from the perspective of a battered woman.
3)
Write a
poem or song lyrics to honor a victim of domestic abuse.
v Finally, you will present your findings in a Power Point presentation to the school community and the Mayor’s office.
1. You will work in groups of three to four. Each member of the group will be responsible for each of the worksheets and will be responsible for four slides.
2. You will use the various steps of the Public Policy approach and Public Policy Analyst worksheets to do the following:

Define the
problem.
·
Identifying
causes.
· Describe existing policies concerning the problem.
· Develop solutions.
· Select the best solution for your problem.
· You will use the Internet resources below to gather information. You may also use printed or visual media, lyrics, etc.
3.
You will use the information from the worksheets
from the TIPS website to prepare a Power Point storyboard of a minimum of 12
slides.
4.
You must
have a short narration to accompany the presentation of approximately 1 minute
per slide. Each member of the group will be responsible for the narration of
his/her slides.
5.
Each
member must also choose one of the three bonus assignments. The
guidelines are listed below. These will be presented along with the Power
Point.
6.
The
group will present their report and findings to the Mayor and the school
community with a Power Point Presentation and the accompanying narration, as
well as the bonus assignments.
You will need to use the 6-step public policy
approach and complete the worksheets for each step in blue, on your
own. You should do the following in your
Power Point presentation:
You will create a
PowerPoint report composed of a minimum of 10 slides for the Mayor and his
committee that documents your findings on this problem.
a)
Have twelve (12) slides showing your information
and one (1) slide listing the credits (like a Website).
b)
Research the sources to create your
presentation.
c)
Your slides will be based on the 6-step
PPA (Public Policy Analysis).
d)
Focus
your presentation on factual information rather than opinion.
e)
Your presentation will also include
information showing the class how you came to your conclusions.
f) You should include at least 3 graphics in your presentation.
