The Battle of the Bulge 2003

Introduction

Obesity is a major problem for the youth of the Bronx.  A significant amount of all American youths are considered to be obese.  Overweight and physical inactivity accounts for more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the United States, second only to tobacco-related deaths. Obesity and overweight are linked to the nation's number one killer – heart disease – as well as diabetes and other chronic conditions.

We should begin to look at obesity as a serious illness that is curable with proper education and a will to implement the things that are learned.  Your group is assigned to teach the students at John F. Kennedy about the food they eat and ways to avoid some of the health risk associated with their diets.

You will use PPA to research causes of obesity in Bronx youths, look at existing policies related, and come up with solutions for the problem of obesity.

Task

Write your findings in a 2-3-page typed paper. Use your six Public Policy Worksheets to help you.  Also, use the six steps Public Policy Approach listed below to help you.

1.     Define the problem as outlined in the above introduction.

2.     Gather evidence that Bronx children are obese.

3.     Identify causes of the obesity problem in the Bronx.

4.     Evaluate policies that already exist to deal with the problem.

5.     Develop solutions that your group seems most promising.

6.     Select best solution from alternatives you selected in step 5 above.

Process

1.        You will be placed in-groups of four.

2.        You are required to print worksheet # 1 Define the problem. You and your partners will read and then answer the question(s) on the worksheet using information from various resources.

3.         Repeat step 2, for worksheets # 2 Gather evidence, # 3 Identify causes, # 4 Evaluate a policy and # 5 Develop solutions.

4.        Print worksheet # 6 Select best solutions and then complete the questions to develop a policy statement and then present evidence to support your position.

5.        Your final task will be to present the evidence to the class in the form of a written document and convince us that the problem exists and secondly that your public policy alternative will work.

Conclusion

Most of the illnesses associated with Obesity do not manifest themselves until a person reaches middle age and is on their way to becoming elderly. Adolescence by nature often fell that they are immune to the common problems that plague their adult counter parts.  Besides the social and psychological implications surrounding obesity, this sense of immunity is probably true.  However, things done in the dark often times comes to light for us in the future.  This is why it is important for students to educate themselves about what obesity is and the things they can do to help reduce the cases.  Student should practice good eating habits and come up with ways to maintain their proper body weight.  Through learning the strategies to combat obesity, students can win the battle of the bulge by living happier and healthier adult lives.
