Youth Diabetes Epidemic In The U.S.

INTRODUCTION

AGENTS

A Public Health Emergency.  Listen  Up!

An epidemic is spreading like wildfire throughout our country.

People most at risk for developing this disease have little or no information about it.

Those people are YOU.

Type 2 diabetes is no longer considered “adult onset diabetes” because it is increasing at alarming rates among children and adolescents.  Rapid growth of diabetes in youth is greatest in the industrialized world.  Surprising?  For sure.  These are the nations most advanced in science, technology, communication, and education.  The question is WHY?

Consider this dear agents.  As an adolescent living in the US, you and your generation are the most vulnerable to Type 2 diabetes.  Moreover, many of the young people with this disease have few early symptoms and may remain undiagnosed and untreated for a long period of time.  During this period diabetes can start its devastating effects on the body which include damage to the heart and circulation, the kidneys, and the nerves, as well as vision impairment and amputations.

You are a 10th grade student who is anxious to get the word out about this scourge on your generation. Therefore you have volunteered to join a team of students from New York City who will attend a National Conference on Type 2 Diabetes in US Youth:  Prevention and Control.  You have been asked to research this topic.  Why is there a growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes in US teenagers?  What are the risk factors for this disease?  How do lifestyle behaviors, environment, and ethnicity play a part in this disease?  The answers to these and other questions will be the focus of your investigation for this WebQuest.

TASK

Agents, the mission for which you have volunteered is to conduct a WebQuest on Type 2 Diabetes in the US youth population.  You will use internet resources, the library, newspapers, magazines, and other media to research this problem and make recommendations for prevention and control.

The work done on this assignment will prepare you for the National Conference on Diabetes scheduled for Washington DC in October.  You have the advantage of using your peers in this class as a sounding board who will offer feedback on the following three products that you will share in class and later at the Conference You will be using the TIPS Public Policy Analyst to help develop your report.

PROCESS

This WebQuest will guide toward the completion of three different products:

1.    A group report of 3-5 pages using the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) as your guide

2.    An oral presentation of about 5 minutes.

3.    A creative piece of work.

Lest you be apprehensive about what you have undertaken my new recruits, relax, there is no need for fear.  Read on…..

Your successful completion of this project is assured in a number of ways.

Also, remember that you can use your neighborhood library, friends and relatives with diabetes, and other class instructors as additional sources of information.

You have been divided into teams of 4 students.  Each team consists of a:

·       Team leader who makes sure all directions are followed, directs group discussions, and assembles and submits final documents to the teacher
