Mr.
Niebergall
decolonization: The
process in which European colonies in Africa and Asia became independent states, mainly in
the period after World War II.
developing nation:
a country with little trade and industry and a low standard of living.
developed nation:
a country with strong trade and industry and a high standard of living.
imperialism:
the practice of one country controlling the government and wealth of weaker
countries.
During the
period of decolonization, the peoples of Africa and Asia became free of European
imperialism. The new nations in Africa and Asia finally received the long promised self
determination for their people. However
with the Europeans political imperialism gone, new problems arose. The peoples of Africa and Asia now faced problems that had long been
submerged during imperialism, such as ethnic and tribal rivalry. Other problems that the nations in Africa and Asia faced were also new to the world such
as AIDS. Many of these new nations freed
from European imperialism were now developing nations struggling to rise to the
level of a developed nation such as those in the West (The United States and Western Europe).
You are a
public policy analyst assigned to help study the problems of a developing
nation in Africa or Asia.
You will produce a thematic essay that will incorporate all aspects of
the public policy analyst. Through the
use of the Global History Public Policy Analyst worksheets, you will define the
social problem of the developing nation, gather evidence on the social problem,
determine the causes of the social problem, evaluate the policy that the
developing nation’s government is following to solve the problem, and do a
comparative analysis with another problem that plagues another developing nation. You will be graded on both the completed
GHHPA worksheets and the thematic essay based on the GHHPA worksheets
describing the problems of a developing nation and the public policy used by
the government to deal with the problem.
I. You will be assigned to a group of
four. Using a variety of resources
(Internet websites, your textbook, handouts, etc.), each group will research
the topic of the problems with the nations of Africa and Asia since Decolonization. Each Public Policy worksheet will be collected
and graded as part of your final grade.
You will record your research on the Global History Public Policy Analyst
worksheets (found at the following five links):
·

·
Gather the Evidence
·
Determine Causes
·
Evaluate the Policy
·
Do a Comparative
Analysis
II. After the
GHPPA worksheets are completed, then the independent
creation of your thematic essay must begin.
Your thematic essay must incorporate all elements of the GHPPA
worksheets. In addition your thematic
essay must incorporate all the elements of a New York State Regent thematic
essay which includes an introduction, several body paragraphs and a conclusion.

Standard
2: World History
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate
their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning
points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety
of perspectives.
The problems
that plague the developing world stem in part from their domination by the European
nations that controlled them since the 1800s.
Many of the European nations that had controlled the people of Africa and Asia had often not properly prepared their
colonies for independence. The
Europeans had often not created the institutions that were needed in Africa and Asia for a successful democratic
government. In addition the economies of
the African and Asian colonies were created to enrich the European imperial
power and not to make the colony economically independent. Finally modern problems of racism, ethnic
strife and AIDS have made it difficult for developing nations to rise to the
level of a developed nation.
