Absolutism: Hindsight is 20/20

Global Review

Do Now:

What would you do if you had total control over a country? How would you run your country? Would you ask for assistance from friends or family? Would you strive to be nice to your people, or would you pursue your own interests without concern for them?

Introduction:

During the 16th and 17th centuries, monarchs in Europe and Asia worked hard to create a centralized government in their countries. Their goal in achieving this end was to place themselves at the center of the government. In order for a monarch to be “and Absolute monarch” they had to have total control over their country and claim divine right. In order to be successful in the later, they needed to prove to their subjects that they were chosen by god to rule their country. Once they achieved this, Absolute monarchs were able to rule their country in any manner that they saw fit. Monarchs such as Peter the Great, and Louis XIV will always be remembered by historians for their actions.

However, despite the fact that some of these monarchs were well liked by their people, they created a governmental system based on inequalities.

Your task:

You will be working by yourself to create an essay. You will do this by analyzing one specific Absolute monarch utilizing the GHPPA steps and worksheets. For each monarch, you must use all five steps of the GHPPA in order to analyze what they did and how the people in their countries responded to them. For each worksheet you complete, you will have another piece to your essay. Your essay will be graded based on the rubric below.

Process:

We will be working together and individually looking at the web pages below to access information on Absolute monarchs. Through out our looking for information, we will be using the 5 GHPPA worksheets to analyze your monarchs successes or weaknesses. The last part of the exercise will be to come up with suggestions for how this monarch could have improved his country, or how his country could have made changes to improve their status.

1)    Review the background information sheets that I give you.

2)    Begin filling out the first worksheet from the GHPPA to identify possible problems of your monarchs rule.

3)    After you have completed the first worksheet, begin work on the second worksheet to help you gather evidence of the problem.

4)    Then complete the third worksheet to assist you in determining a cause.

5)    If there were policies that attempted to curb absolutism in your monarchs country, then complete worksheet 4.

6)    Next, you must do a comparative analysis.

7)    For the last paragraph of your paper, you will come up with other suggestions for your monarchs country.
