AIDS and HIV Prevention

Webquest for Ms. Devall’s Living Environment Classes

Christopher Columbus HS

9th Grade

INTRODUCTION

You are a family physician working in a large clinic in the South Bronx.  You are only midway through your week, and already you have seen three patients who were HIV positive.  It really saddens you to see so many cases, as you know that AIDS and HIV are still not curable.  You can’t stand to see another neighborhood kid taken by this preventable disease!  You have decided to do something about it!

You and one other doctor in your clinic decide to devote 100% of your time to fighting the spread of AIDS.  You want to open your own clinic dedicated to the treatment and prevention of AIDS and HIV.

YOUR TASK

You can’t afford the cost of opening the clinic on your own, so you’re going to need a grant from the city to pay the $2 million startup cost.  In order to win the grant, you and your partner must prove to the Mayor that AIDS and HIV are truly a problem in the Bronx, and that your clinic will make progress in the fight against this terrible disease.

THE PROCESS

Step 1:  Gather the evidence!  (TIPS Worksheet)

Find information that shows HIV is a real problem in the Bronx.  A few good sources:

NYC Vital Signs – New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

2003 Northeast Bronx AIDS/HIV Profile

Step 2:  Research to Identify the Causes  (TIPS Worksheet)

·        How and why does AIDS spread?

·        What types of behaviors increase the risk of contracting the HIV virus?

·        Is there a danger that some people are spreading the virus without knowing it?

Step 3:  Propose a solution

You need to convince the government that your proposed clinic will help fight the spread of AIDS and HIV.  How will your clinic do this?  What form will your education and/or testing take?

Your proposal will have to be presented to the Mayor of New York and the Director of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Make a PowerPoint presentation to bring to your meeting to help you make your case.

PowerPoint Requirements

·        Title Slide

·        Introduce your proposal:  what are you asking the Mayor to do?

·        State your reasons:  include statistics about AIDS and HIV in the Bronx

·        Propose your clinic:

o       What are the ways that HIV spreads, and what information does the public need to know about prevention?

o       Convince the Mayor that AIDS testing is important

o       List the different treatments that your clinic will offer (just name them, explanation of treatments is not required).

Your presentation should use 8 to 10 slides, with a font size of 16.  The presentation should include more than just words (statistics, pictures, graphs, etc).  Make it appealing to the eye.

Upon completion, each set of partners will be required to present their proposal to the class.

EVALUATION
