INTRODUCTION

Imagine being attacked or killed just because of your religion?

During the Crusades, which lasted from the years 1095-1200, Christians from Western Europe traveled to the Middle East in an attempt to capture the Holy Land from its Muslim rulers.  The Crusades started when Pope Urban II and other Roman Catholic Christian leaders called upon Western Europeans to protect the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Orthodox Christians), which was being attacked by Muslim armies.  These crusaders were swept into such a religious frenzy that they killed Byzantine Christians and Jews on the way to the Holy Land.  When they arrived at the Holy Land, they killed many Muslims.

TASK

You are Foreign Service officers of the United States State Department (which didn’t exist during the Crusades).  As a Foreign Service officer, one of your duties is to investigate human rights abuses in other parts of the world and report these abuses to Congress and the President.  Congress and the President will then use these reports to change American foreign policy and to try to help people that are suffering throughout the world.

Your first task is to complete the five step Global History Public Policy Analysis, which is outlined in the PROCESS section below this one.  This five step process, which also has five separate worksheets, must be completed in a three student group.  These worksheets will be distributed to Congress and the President.

Your second task is, in a group of three students, to make a power point presentation to the United Nations detailing the religious killing that took place during the Crusades.  This power point presentation must include appropriate maps and pictures, must be at least 8 slides long, and must detail the religious persecution that occurred.  Each of the five steps in the Global History Public Policy Analysis (worksheets #1-#5) must be discussed in at least one slide.  This power point presentation will be presented to the rest of the class.

Your third task is to write a paragraph summary informing me of the work each group member did for the first two tasks.  Each group member must sign this summary.  You must inform me if a group member is not contributing.

Make sure all of the information you research on the internet is confirmed in the textbook or other printed reference materials.

PROCESS

As a public policy analyst, you need to develop the following policy skills:

Developing these skills will help you fill out the five worksheets due as part of the second task.

Complete the worksheets using the Internet resources below, your textbook and your notes.  These worksheets will help you complete the rest of the task.  The links to the five worksheets are located at the bottom of each page linked below.

1.   IDENTIFY THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS WITH THE CRUSADES.  (Worksheet #1)

What happened to Christians, Jews and Muslims during the crusades?

2.   GATHER EVIDENCE OF THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE CRUSADES. (Worksheet #2)

How do you know that this religious persecution occurred?

3.   DETERMINE THE CAUSES AND FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE ABUSES THAT OCCURRED DURING THE CRUSADES. (Worksheet #3)

Why did this religious persecution happen?  Look at the issue from all sides: the Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

4.   EVALUATE THE EXISTING POLICIES THAT PREVENT ANOTHER CRUSADES FROM TAKING PLACE. (Worksheet #4)

Is it possible for another crusades to happen or are there policies against such a practice?

5.   COMPARE THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF THE CRUSADES WITH OTHER SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN GLOBAL HISTORY. (Worksheet #5)

What situations in global history are similar to the crusades?

CONCLUSION

The Crusades were a dark time in history where humans were attacked and killed just because of their religion.  Unfortunately, religious violence is still a part of the world today and is a major problem in some areas of the world.  Human rights are a never ending mission.

In this Webquest, you have used the steps of the public policy analyst, and the internet, to research a historical social problem.  You have also used your analytical skills to compare the problems of the Crusades to a similar social problem.
