THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Theme:  Change

Introduction

How would you feel if you have suddenly become jobless, you can no longer afford to feed and clothe your family, and have lost your home? Would you like someone to help you? What if your family and friends are in the same situation? Would you accept any kind of help from an unlikely source, the government? Most people are against what they term “big government”, meaning giving people something for nothing, especially welfare and social security payments to the needy in society. What they do not realize is that these programs were introduced at a time when the government had no choice but to come to the aid of millions of Americans who were unemployed, homeless, and destitute. This period in America is called the Great Depression, and it was a time when Uncle Sam came to the aid of its citizens in need directly or indirectly Some of the programs introduced back in the 1930s such as social security, welfare and aid to dependent children are with us today.
