Global Warming: To what end?

Introduction

Violent storms, drought, and other climate change may mean some people will not get to eat properly in the future- possibly the near future. You know that unless you become extremely wealthy, you and your family might be at risk for starvation. What is the effect of constantly pumping certain greenhouse gases into the atmosphere? You are a member of an interdisciplinary investigatory committee, composed of members from the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, and Congressional Task force aides.

Task

Using the Public Policy Analyst, your charge is to investigate:

1)   the hottest planet found in the solar system, and why it is so hot;

2)   the relative values of the gases found in our atmosphere originally

3)   the four main gases proposed to be causing increased energy effects on our planet (stronger thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, increased periods of drought, etc.,) and other climate change.

4)   the difference between our earlier atmosphere and the present atmosphere by percentage

5)   the  rate of change for each of the proposed greenhouse gases

6)   show a graph, with the x-axis denoting time, and the y-axis denoting increase (in parts per million) of one of the proposed greenhouse gases

7)   present a two to three page paper, and an oral presentation of five minutes. A rubric will be given to you and your cohort to assess the importance of your analysis.

8)   demonstrate how the problems you have found in our atmosphere may lead to decreased food available to the human population

Process

1.     Go to the World Wide Web and look up the hyperlinks below.

2.     Complete the Public policy Analyst worksheets hyperlinks .

3.     Complete a two to three page  paper based on your findings.

4.     Be prepared to present your findings to the class by oral presentation.

Gathering Information:

PPA

Problem is identified and researched thoroughly.  All steps of the PPA are addressed and the handouts are complete.

Problem is identified and researched.

All six steps of the PPA are addressed.  Most worksheets are completed correctly.

Problem is identified and partially researched.  Some of the worksheets are incomplete.

Group

Dynamics

Students work cooperatively in groups each contributing to the final products.  Students remain on task completing work in a timely manner.

Students work cooperatively in groups.  Students remain on task most of the time, however they do need several reminders to remain on task.

Group dynamics are poor.  Students do not work cooperatively and/or they do not all contribute to the final product.

Research

Paper:

Content

All of the required topics are addressed thoroughly in the paper.  Content is accurate and ideas are supported well by research.

All of the required topics are addressed in the paper, however, some topics could have been researched more thoroughly.  Content is accurate.

All of the topics are not addressed in the paper.

More than two topics are not covered in enough detail.

Content is inaccurate.

Research Paper:

Grammar

Paper is grammatically correct.  There are no spelling or punctuation mistakes.

There are a few minor grammatical errors.

There are major grammatical errors.

Research Paper:

Presentation

Paper follows all requirements described in the task.  Resources are cited properly.

Almost all of the requirements for the paper are met.  Resources are cited properly.

Major requirements for the paper are not met.
