INTRODUCTION

Enlightenment (Definition) – In the 18th –century, a European movement in which thinkers attempted to apply the principles of reason and the scientific method to all aspects of society.

The influence of the scientific revolution soon spread beyond the world of science.  Philosophers admired Newton because he had used reason to explain the laws that governed nature.  People began to look for laws to govern human behavior as well.  Ideas of the Scientific Revolution paved the way for a new movement called the Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason.  During this period philosophers like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Voltaire, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and Baron de Montesquieu, helped to lead the way of the spread of enlightenment.

You are now being placed in Europe where the monarch rules by absolute power.  You are to take on the role of one of the enlightenment philosophers and create a way to advocate for “rule by reason”.

You have joined a group to investigate the social problem, causes of the problems, and to gather evidence. Your group will have to design a poster board explaining one of the three investigations.   You will use your poster board as propaganda to convince the citizenry of Europe to accept the Enlightenment ideas rather than the arbitrary rule of absolute monarchs. Each group will have to make an oration (oral presentation) and, explain in detail, your findings as represented on the poster board. You have a very important task to fulfill. You are fighting for democracy, freedom and “unalienable rights”!!!!

GOOD LUCK PHILOSOPHE !

CONCLUSION

You have learned, from your research and presentation in this web quest, that the Enlightenment was one of the most influential movements in modern history. It changed the existing beliefs and created a new set of values that would stir revolution for generations. The absolute kings of Europe, with all their armies and wealth, could not withstand the might of the pen and human reason. You also have seen how ideas can be spread through oratory and you can now see the importance of studying public policy in ages past. You have earned your degree.

Our next web quest will investigate the public policies of Napoleon, a son of the enlightenment and the subsequent French Revolution. I’ll bet you can’t wait !!
