Athens and Sparta

Who gets to control the Government?

  or

Athens and Sparta were destined to be the greatest city-states of Classical Greek history.  However, like all great powers they had to overcome problems that in order to achieve greatness.  In both Athens and Sparta the problem that was debated was who was going to control the Government and how were laws going to be made.  In the Seventh Century B.C.E (700-600 B.C.E.) Athens and Sparta debated this question, each within their own city.  The debates were very violent, causing many deaths.  People in both cities feared that if they didn’t come up with a solution their cities might be destroyed by the violence.  They had to decide who should control the Government.  Athens and Sparta each came up with its policy to solve the problem.  These solutions were different because of different circumstances in each City-State.

As a policy analyst your job will be to figure out what Sparta and Athens did in this situation.

Task:

your task will be to write a 3 page paper on either Athens or Sparta.  You will also create and give a presentation with a group of 3-4 people on either Athens or Sparta.  In responding to this task you will use the GHPPA Model.

Process:

This is the process that you should use to write your paper and your group’s presentation.  The paper and presentation should have steps to them.  These are the GHPPA steps that we have discussed in class.  As a reminder these are:

1.                             Identify the Problem  -“hey, this sucks, i’m getting all wet!”

2.                             Gather Evidence            -  “Hmmm…my clothes are soggy and when i squeeze them water drips out.  This proves it! There is a problem, I’m getting wet!”

3.                             Determine the Causes- “There are clouds in the sky, i hear thunder and i see lightning.  That means that i’m getting wet because it’s raining.”

4.                             Evaluate the Policy   -  I got an umbrella.  That seems to have stopped me from getting wet; but it cost me $10.  I could have gone inside instead, and saved the $10.”

5.                             Comparative Analysis-  oh boy! next time something like this happens, I’ll…”

Now for the steps to write your own Paper:
