GLOBAL HISTORY 4

APARTHEID

APARTHEID EXPLOITED THE NON-WHITE POPULATION IN

SOUTH AFRICA

INTRODUCTION

How does it feel to be a foreigner in your own land? Millions of non-whites knew and experienced this feeling during the period of apartheid in South Africa. The apartheid system of South Africa existed began in 1948 and ended in 1994. During those years the ruling white government imposed many laws that forced all non-whites to live and work in terrible conditions. Thirteen percent of the population was white. However, this group owned 75 % of the land and the best land at that. The black population was moved into ghetto-like townships and were completely separated from the affluent whites under the government policy of apartheid. Apartheid was accomplished legally and constitutionally under the white leadership of the Afrikaner government. You will investigate this issue under the global theme of racism. Apartheid was a legal form of racism that led to three decades of conflict in South Africa.
