Introduction:

Have you ever worked 14 or 16 hours a day with only Sunday off for pennies (or shillings) per day?  You began working in a factory or a mine at age five.  You do not, and probably will never, know how to read or write.  If you are late to work your foreman has the authority to whip or even fire you!  These, and other working conditions help describe the Industrial Revolution of 18th and 19th century England.  Why would people be treated this way?

The Industrial Revolution was a major change in the lives of people of England.  Machines replaced hand labor.  Farming people were forced off the land and had to go to new and growing cities to seek employment in factories.  People who had worked sun-up to sundown now had to work according to a clock controlled by a new type of master: the capitalist.  This person replaced the feudal lord as the master of the workers.
