INTRODUCTION: israel_atz_flags_bike.gif (50646 bytes)

After 70 A.D. the conquering Romans expelled the Jews from their homeland in Palestine. Jewish life in  dispersion became known as the DIASPORA. Jews lived as minorities wherever they settled and became a minority even in their homeland. This condition made them vulnerable to persecution. Throughout the Middle Ages they experienced this persecution as members of a religious minority. With the rise of nationalism in the 19th century their persecution was largely based on their status as an ethnic or national minority. This persecution reached its zenith during the HOLOCAUST, perpetrated by Nazi Germany, which resulted in the extermination of approximately six million Jews.

Problem: The lack of a national homeland for Jews.
