WEBQUEST- Racial discrimination and labeling

Introduction: Racial discrimination and labeling are worldwide problems. I personally did not feel its effects until I moved to New York City at the age of eighteen. I felt isolated and confused. You are asked to resolve the issues that relate to the cliques and labeling in your school. You will then decide how you can help reform your schools student body on how to integrate all groups.

 

        Task:

 You will use the following outline: Your goal and objectives will be to:

·       Define and describe problem.

 

·       Gather evidence for the problem.

 

·       Identify causes for this problem.

 

·       Describe and evaluate student government policies.

 

·       Develop solutions/ policies for the problem.

 

·       Select the best policy.

 

·       Identify benefits for chosen policy.


 
Process: Using a tips website you will first do step 1 @ www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/tips/webquest.
     Step 1- Worksheet is to help you define the problem. When you are done with step 1 proceed with "Information Gathering Tools”.

 

         You must explore the following issues to help ease new comers to our school. To achieve this you will need to answer the following questions:
     

  Your class will be divided into groups of three. You are asked to interview at least two people who moved to New York City as a teenager or an adult. Use the following questions for your interview. The questions will be given as a handout sheet.

 

1.    Where did you come from?

2.    Whom do you live with?
3.    Where do you live?
4.    How do you feel people treat you?
5.    Are you able to express yourself clearly in English?
6.    Are you involved in your community?
7.    Have you felt discrimination?
8.    How do you look at other races?
9.    How would you define racial labeling?

Conclusion:
 At the conclusion of this Webquest, the student will have learned how to work in groups and resolve racial issues amongst the student body. Students will understand that Discrimination does exist and the role it plays on society and in their lives. The students will identify the process it takes to create changes in their school and community. Your next project will include the reading of When I was Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago.
