INTRODUCTION

Teenage pregnancy has lasting effects on communities, schools and young women placed in the position of becoming teenage mothers. In The Color Purple by Alice Walker http://www.luminarium.com/contemporary/purplexcerpt.htm the main character Celie has two children at a young age out of wedlock.  In this project you will identify what are the obstacles confronting Celie as a young mother and what were the societal problems that led to her pregnancy.  In addition you will identify how Celie's problem can be connected to the current teen pregnancy problem in New York City.  You will work in-groups of 5-6 students to develop a proposal to create an in school pregnancy prevention program based on the research from this project.
