The Fourteenth Amendment

Introduction:

African Americans have gone from being three-fifths of a man in the U.S. Constitution, to citizenship, to guaranteed equality by the Fourteenth Amendment, to pigmentation prejudice better known as Racial Profiling. Racial Profiling has affected African Americans in every area of their lives. These areas include:  

1. driving while black (DWB), searched illegally, shot and sometimes killed.

2. being stripped searched by U.S. customs agents.

3. Bias Media portrayal of minorities.

4. standing while black and oftentimes being abused by the police.

 

 

Task:

You will review the U.S. Constitution and define the rights of slaves as they evolved from three-fifths of a man to present.

You will write reports on Racial Profiling and present them to the class.

You will write reports on Patrick Dorismond and Amadou Diallo and present them to the class.

 

 

Process:

You will work in groups.

You will use the internet to locate cases of human rights abuses.

You will use the resource section to guide their work.

You will do a skit on racial profiling.

You will have a debate on Racial Profiling.

Evaluation:

The students will be evaluated by using the following rubric.

 

Grade A

Shows a thorough understanding of the topic.

Addresses all aspects of the task.

Shows the ability to analyze, evaluate, compare and contrast issues.

Supports the topic with relevant facts, examples, and specific details.

Presents and submits a strong and well organized oral written report.

 

 

Grade B

Shows a good understanding of the topic.

Addresses all aspects of the task.

Shows the ability to analyze and evaluate the issues.

Includes relevant facts, examples and specific details

Present and submit and organized oral and written report.

 

Grade C  

Shows a satisfactory understanding of the topic.

Addresses most of the aspects of the task.

Able to analyze issues and events but not in depth.

Uses some relevant facts, examples and details

Presents and submits oral report, but not very organized.

 

Grade D

Shows little understanding of the topic.

Uses vague and inaccurate information.

Does not present an acceptable oral report.

Conclusion:

The students will have a basic understanding of the rights guaranteed to the African American in the Constitution and how Racial Profiling is a violation of their civil rights and their civil liberties.
