Brown V Board of Education

Introduction:
Mr. And Mrs. Brown and their
daughter Linda lived in
that permitted the schools to be segregated. Linda had to
attend a school for blacks. She had to ride 21 blocks to a school that was old
and had a shortage of teachers. There was a school for whites
that was only five blocks from Linda’s house. Her parents felt that it
was a better school than the one for blacks. Linda’s parents went to Federal
Court to try to force the school for whites to admit Linda. The Federal Court
ruled against the Brown’s. They appealed the decision to the Supreme Court and
won.
Task:
As a result of this Web Quest students will
research the laws that led to separate but Equal using CompuLegal, what these laws were and what
they were intended to do? They will also discover how these laws were struck
down.
The students will write
reports on these laws.

You will read the laws and
write a report.
You will present your reports
orally to the class.
You will discuss how the Jim
Crow laws Board affected the everyday lives of the people.
You will discuss how Brown VS
The of Education struck down segregated schools.
You will read the two
articles and report on how new federal laws were initiated by politicians who
were opposed to desegregation.
You will report on the laws
that were passed to re-segregate the public schools.
You will discuss the
relationship between segregation by race and segregation by poverty in
public school.
You will discuss what will
help move the country back toward a less polarized society.

The teacher will give the
students the article to read.
Evaluation:
The students will take a test
consisting of multiple-choice questions and two short essays questions. In writing the essays the students will
demonstrate a basic knowledge of what separate but equal means, have a general
understanding of why segregation was based on race. And be able to discuss how
the de-segregation laws have been gradually reverse.
Conclusion:
The students will have a
basic knowledge of how the Black codes and Jim Crow Laws were instrumental in
segregating schools. They will be able to discuss the impact that Brown vs. the
Board of Education had on the schools in our country and how they are now being
re-segregated.
