Genetic Engineering

 INTRODUCTION

:

We are facing a change in our financial culture where maximum profit for shareholders is more important. We need to produce more food such as milk and milk products. It would be great to have all the food we want with less effort.

This can reduce land, labor and capital, sending profits higher. Genetic engineering can accomplish this using cloning technology. Food shortages can be eliminated, and we can feed the world. This web quest will introduce you to a new dimension of learning technology, as well as expose you to science in industry, finance and the population. Cloning and genetics will be part of our future.

Cloning is a recent discovery to accomplish this. Science fiction is now a fact of our lives and our future.

TaskTask

We need to create a super cow to produce more milk because food is expensive. You are to use cloning to support your position, for or against the use of this technology to achieve high milk yields. Include in your discussion the probability that it may enter the food chain and affect our present natural food production base.

You will use The Public Policy Analyst in your PowerPoint presentation. http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/intro.html

PROCEDURE

PROCESS

You will work in groups of 3 or 4 students to produce a web Quests of about 3 to 4 pages using the PPA. Discuss the history, evolution and utility of this technology. You will evaluate it’s impact on our population as well as any other aspect which captures your interest. You will use the six steps of the PUBLIC POLICY ANALYST in your

research.  http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/intro.html

Define the problem

Gather evidence

Identify causes

Evaluate a policy

RESOURCES:

You will now be required to surf the web to find the required information relating to this topic. Tease your imagination and interest into the unknown. Let it

Lead you to a branch of science that is the cutting edge of modern biology..

You have some Web sites to do your research. After reviewing these you are also

required to source some of your own websites to show your

knowledge of the PUBLIC POLICY ANALYST.

      Good Luck!!

EVALUATION

Your evaluation will be based on the following

(1)    A draft work plan, a review of the resources given, with demonstrated evidence of the visit. This will be submitted by the 1st marking period.

(2)    Your webquest to be done by the 2nd marking period.

(3)    Your power point and an oral presentation to be done during the last four weeks of the term. Your presentation will include a question and answer session where ALL members of your team will respond.

There is no reason to fail, as long as an effort is made

Divide the task within your group since individual work will not be evaluated.

Your classmates will also have a say in your grate, but remember what goes around comes around, so be fair to others, you never know!

A    Demonstrate a clear and concise understanding of the topic, its content and

     PPA

Your oral presentation, language and communication skills in accordance with

New York State education standards.  80-90 points.

B: An understanding of content and PPA, presents and defend positions

Taken, as well as language and communication skills. 70-79 points.

C Not a very clear command of content but some command of facts and public

policy  analyst, defends some aspects of topic. Some language skills.60-69

              points.

Your class evaluation will de as follows: A=10 points. B=7 points. C=5 points.

Conclusion

At the end of this activity it is hoped that your use of technology will improve your skill in using the internet  to do investigative research and sift out required information in a clear manner. To be able to brainstorm and to evaluate situations using critical thinking skills.

You will be empowered to assume maximum responsibility to work towards a desired end result using cooperative learning skills in teamwork.

Finally to extrapolate the scientific theory in the classroom towards a real world situation using PUBLIC POLICY ANALYST to this final goal.
