Web quest:   New York City is producing a lot of Solid Waste

Introduction:  A lot of solid wastes are being produced daily in New York City.  These solid waste are used materials from the household materials, industries, public and private offices, and from hospitals.   Most of these materials are recyclable.  The recyclable solid waste can be put back into use through proper waste management.   How can we do this?  Every one has to be involved.

Task:

Task No. 1

As public policy analyst, you are to investigate on the policy about waste disposal in the city to find out how to manage waste properly; remember not in my backyard.

Task no.2

You are to do this worksheet by conducting and completing at least ten questioners by asking people either in the street or at home if and how they manage their solid waste.

Questioners

Name (optional)

Address (optional)

Male or Female

What is recycling?

What are recyclable materials?

Give examples of the materials that

Where can we get these materials?

What is the importance of recycling?

Do you think the New York City will benefit if we recycle?

What about hazardardous and non-hazardous waste?

Do you recycle?

How?

Can you speak with your neighbors about recycling?

Thank you for completing these questioners

Task No. 3

You are to discuss your findings in group, do a group presentation, write a two-page individual report about recycling of solid waste, and submit your questioners. Each group will have an assigned role. Each member will explore the background information. From this research, each group will draft a role position statement based on information gathered from the interviewees. Each of you will bring your written position statement to the class for discussion.    Groups will discuss possible solutions to the public policy issue of solid waste management. This written solution should be supported with the arguments researched and the group discussion.

This will be in form of an oral and written presentation.

The 6-step public policy approach will assist you in carrying out this web quest.

Solution

On the completion of this web quest, you would have been accomplishing these objectives;

Use the internet resources to carry out research on the solid waste management,

Understand what solid waste means,

Know the difference between renewable and the non-renewable waste,

Explain the risk involved if we do not recycle,

Estimate the quantity and the quality of natural resources saved when renewable solid wastes are recycled,

Understand the need of incorporating and maintaining good health culture, and

Understand and describe the public policy of the solid waste management.

You will also be able to demonstrate evidence of the knowledge of the Science Standard on the solid waste and its management; and the New York City performance standard:

 Standard1:

Health, Family and Consumer Sciences

Standard 2:   A Safe and Healthy Environment:

You will acquire the knowledge needed in creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

Standard 3:   Resource Management:

You will understand and be able to manage your personal

                       And your community resources; and

Standard 6:     Develop competence

In the use of science technologies
