Are women receiving equal pay doing the same job men do?

Introduction:

Mr. Phillips and Ms. Brown were the newest professors to be hired for the Educational Administrative Department of a private New York university. Mr. Phillips worked as a teacher in the New York City public school system for 18 years before making the change to teach at the graduate level.  Ms. Brown was a New York City school teacher too, but her background also included working as an assistant principal for the past 5 years giving her a total of 15 years experience.  She also has a doctorate in Educational Administration.

Both professors will be teaching 12 credits a term.

Mr. Phillips is married and has 2 children.

Ms. Brown is single and has no children.

Mr. Phillips was hired one month after Ms. Brown. He was being paid $10,000 more than Ms. Brown. When Ms. Brown found out she asked the dean that hired her why she is earning so much less than Mr. Phillips and the only answer she received was that Mr. Phillips has to support a family.

You are a newspaper reporter and it’s your job to write an article exposing this fact.

Task:

You are going to write an article for your school newspaper.  You should be sure to use the PPA in helping you write your article.  This is going to be an editorial.  You decide the point of view you are taking.  Do you agree with the dean, that Mr. Phillips should be paid $10,000 more than Ms. Brown because he is married and has a family, or should they receive the same salary for the same job?

You will be following the Public Policy Analyst in helping you gather information to write your article.  In order to guide you, there are worksheets available to help you in your task.

Conclusion:

You should have learned from your research that sex discrimination happens when someone is treated less favorably because of their sex or marital status.

Discrimination by gender in the workplace was declared illegal in 1975 when the Sex Discrimination Act became law.

Possibilities for future web quests could include age, race, or sexual orientation discrimination.
