Introduction:

“Hey baby, you know I’m gonna love you forever.”  Empty promises are made every day.  Lakisha really believed Tyrone would love her forever.  Teen pregnancy is a growing problem in the Bronx .  Sex is about physical pleasure.  Marriage is about a commitment.  You can have one without the other, but do you think that is what Lakisha wanted?

  • Did you know that 1 in 10 teenage girls in America become pregnant each year?
  • One in 4 sexually active teens has an STD.
  • More than 80% of teenage mothers end up in poverty and on welfare.
  • 3 million teenagers are infected with STD’s each year, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis.

You have volunteered to be part of Mayor Bloomberg’s task force in New York City to develop a new policy that addresses the issues involving teenage pregnancy.  Remember you will be working as a public policy analyst in order to develop solutions to this ever growing problem.

Task:

As a member of a special Task Force created by Mayor Bloomberg, you will have to work with the community in order to help teenagers make healthy choices about their future.

Upon completion of your research, you will be able to choose one of three of the following projects to show the solution you have come up with:

Project 1:  A type-written report offering solutions to the problem.  This report must be a minimum of 2 – 3 pages.  In addition to the report, you must supply a bibliography citing books and internet sites.  No cut and paste is permitted.

Project 2:  A poster (at least 16” x 20”) depicting a solution to the problem.  Make sure it is clear and easy to understand.  It must be suitable for hanging in school.

Project 3:  A PowerPoint presentation of at least 5 slides.  Be sure to include the websites you used in your developing your solution.

Process:

You may work in groups of 2 or 3 people on a project or you may work independently.  The choice is yours.

You will use the Internet and other sources to research information about teenage pregnancy.

You will be following the Public Policy Analyst in assisting you to do your project.  In order to guide you, there are worksheets available to you.
