On the way to Timbuktu with her father, Wututu sometimes walked and sometimes rode the oxen.  She was so excited that she never felt tired, just impatient to arrive.  Wututu’s aunt had invited Wututu to come and live with her.  She needed help in the market, where she had a stall.  There she sold the elephant tusks and lion skins that Wututu’s father and brother brought her after their hunts.  Wututu did not think that she would be homesick.  She would see so many new things.  Her father had told her about foreign people with pale skin who came to Timbuktu from across the great desert.  They rode ugly beasts with humps on their backs and spoke a strange tongue.  They brought shining cloth and delicate cups to trade.  Still, she would miss her family and the other villagers.  Of course, she would come back home for visits.  Then she would astonish everyone with her tales about the great city.  How her friends would envy her! (AMSCO, PG.355).”

WELCOME TO THE TIME PERIODS OF A.D. 300 -1500 IN THE SECOND LARGEST CONTINENT IN THE WORLD!  THE THREE EMPIRES OF GHANA, MALI AND SONGHAI ARE THE TRADING CENTERS OF THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE.   SEEN AS AN ATTRACTIVE MAGNET AS A RESULT OF SAFE CARAVAN ROUTES AND THE WEALTH OF NATURAL RESOURCES (GOLD AND IVORY), THESE EMPIRES THRIVED WITH TRADE.  HOWEVER, AS POWERFUL AS EACH EMPIRE WAS, ALL THREE DECLINED. WHY?  YOUR JOB IS TO SELECT ONE EMPIRE AND RESEARCH WHY THE SELECTED EMPIRE DECLINED.  YOU ARE TO TYPE A THREE PAGE MINIMUM ESSAY FOLLOWING THE BELOW TASK AS YOUR GUIDELINE.  THIS WILL BE COUNTED AS AN EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT (All completed essays should be turned in no later than June 10).
