INTRODUCTION

You are working on a school paper to raise the awareness of your fellow students on the topic of the deficiencies of a simple vitamin “folic acid” and its consequences. This deficiency in the diet of all childbearing females contribute to the social problem of anomalies in pregnancy .These anomalies contributes to the rising statistics of premature pregnancy, stillbirth, (anencephaly) babies being born with a partial brain or with the absence of a  brain. (Spina bifida) a fetus with the absence of a neural tube or no spinal cord can have lasting effects on young mothers. Your responsibility is to increase awareness of the general public especially all women and teenagers of child bearing age. Folic acid deficiencies are reversible.

TASK

You will be working in groups of fours. Your group will prepare:

1.    A 3-6 term-paper using the Public policy analyst (PPA) model

2.    Two pamphlets targeting teenagers, child bearing adult women and parents about the effects of folic acid deficiencies will be constructed from the class reports.

3.    A 5-8 minutes oral presentation to students in assembly in the auditorium in two weeks.

4.    You will no doubt use some internet websites as resources, at least 5-6 different websites, 2 newspaper articles, 1 magazine and 1 book with up to date references.

The PPA model will aid and guide your group step by step to accomplish your task

The report (including the 6 PPA work sheets), presentation and pamphlets will count for 3 test or 300 points. The rubrics will you exactly how you will be rewarded or graded. “See evaluation section in PPA format”

PROCESS

1.            You should randomly form small groups of 4, choose a leader, a recorder of information, a reporter and an encourager to keep time and keep the group on task.

2.            You should follow the Tips model. Each link of the six-step PPA will direct your process.

3.            Click on each link below. Read the information and fill out the work sheet for each step.

Use the internet websites to complete your assignment.

CONCLUSION

After you have concluded your research project, you should have learnt what folic acid is and how low levels of this vitamin in the blood stream can be detrimental to a fetus and the pregnant mother. You would have familiarized yourself with the foods that contain this valuable vitamin. You should have encountered facts that you could educate your fellow students and their families. You have also introduced technology in the classroom. Your use of the Public Policy Analyst has certainly enhanced your project. Your use of the cooperative events has increased your social skills and it allowed you to with others and better understanding of the social problems that face the community. I hope that in your next web- quest you will be as proficient. By completing this web quest you have done a social service, you have researched a social problem as a public analyst and you have suggested solutions that have helped millions.
