KOREMATSU WEBQUEST

INTRODUCTION

 

Today (August 17,2002) An article appeared about the detention/deportation of  certain Arabic people including  Arab –Americans.  This process was done in secrecy.  With heightened  security and public anxiety concerning   the World Trade Center tragedy ,Our class has been selected  by the community to address our concerns to Senator Kennedy who is investigating the situation.  Many of Kennedy students are Arab –Americans who fear  oral and  physical retribution.  This is in light of the attacks on students.  One such attack put a student in the hospital. Our class will use a program called CompuLegal

 

 

TASK

 

You are to work as a group to create a  report to Senator Kennedy. This research should aid him in creating guidelines for U.S. citizens being detained/deported by our government.  Are the cases of Arab-Americans in 2002 similar to Japanese Americans in l945.?(to see Korematsu v. PROCESS

 

You will divide the class into two groups for the purpose  of finding out about the Korematsu case. One group will seek to justify the U.S. actions against Japanese- Americans. The other group will seek arguments to oppose these actions.

 

Two student leaders will be responsible for technical problems and coordination with the teacher.

The following questions will be addressed using the Compulegal format

  1. What was the Korematsu decision.?
  2. What happened to Mr. Korematsu in  recent times?
  3. Does this change affect your decision making?
  4. Can you find similarities/differences between Arab-Americans today and

Japanese Americans of  yesteryear?

 

The report should follow the guidelines discussed in class  regarding format and standard English. The report should be a minimum of two typed pages.  It should also be viewable on the Internet.

You should include at least one visual.

 

 

RESOURCES

 

In order to have an acceptable report  you should go to as many sources as possible.  These sources must include  CompuLegal  and at least  three requests to consult a Legal Eagle.

You should consult some organizations that may enlighten your search. Current events are especially

Valuable in order to put your research into an updated context.

CONCLUSION

It will be differences of opinión.  This is healthy.  In our country you have the right to present  is hoped that you have had a true learning experience in your Webquest.  As discussed in class there your viewpoint.  However, your viewpoint has been formed by research,  discussion and reflection.  We look forward to hearing from Senator Kennedy to learn how the legislation was formed.
