Project 3: Webquest power point

Introduction:

Today we are audaciously expanding our horizons as we explore space.  New technology places man’s efforts on the top of a gigantic and glorious tower having conquered nature and universal laws.  When Industrialization started in England in the mid of the eighteenth century; it too represented at the time the conquest of nature, making the machine the force that transformed society. As Industrialization expanded we find a nineteenth century England flourishing in one with its capital and investments but on the other, an England as the breeding ground of  a decadent multitude struggling its way in slums, in factories for long hours a day, and children exploited while they work in dangerous and risky conditions. As Industrialization advanced, children 5 and six years of age were forced to work from 13 to 16 hours a day.

Children are the citizens of tomorrow. It is the responsibility of society to guide the steps of these youngsters to enable them to grow and develop in an environment that procures a healthy upbringing to develop personalities with strength and stability to face the challenges of the future. These responsibilities are transformed into public policies that set the standards for our commitments with our young people.

Recently celebrities like the famous Latin singer, Shakira and in past years the T.V. personality Kathy Lee Gifford have been criticized and even boycotted for having worn or supported the use of clothes manufactured at sweat shops. Sweat shops are those known for hiring children and young women to work in unsanitary conditions and without any consideration for human rights.  Historically, nevertheless the worst forms of child labor have been reported in the development of industrialization in England.

Your are a member of the Bilingual Club at Walton High School and all the members are students of Global History. Everybody is concerned about the issue of child labor and the so called sweat shops that has involved the famous Latin singer Shakira. Your club as a group has been asked to explain why child labor is a social problem, its causes and effects and possible public actions that may be taken to eliminate the problem. This will also comprise your Global History project. Historically you will give an account of the time and period in which this problem was manifested in the cruelest form during the Industrialization process in England in the eighteenth century. You will evaluate the policies enacted then to see how effective they were and you will then compare them with the policies enacted today to eliminate child labor. This analysis will lead you to propose actions that may improve or eliminate the problem today.
