If there is lead in your house, in the dust, in paint chips, in the water, in bowls or other dishes, or in your yard, there is a possible exposure to lead.

Children eating lead base paint chips can ingest lead into their bodies. It's easy for toddlers to be exposure because children put everything in their mouths.

If children get lead in their bodies, it is very dangerous because lead affects their immature brains.

Lead dust can get into your lungs when you breathe contaminated air.

Lead poisoning is not a large problem for adults. Adult brains are not growing and they don't put strange things in their mouth.

However, adults should still be careful about lead in the water, utensils and in the air.

For years, children in disadvantaged neighborhoods have been overly exposure to lead pollution.

·       Lead poisoning is one of the environment health problems that threaten disadvantaged minority neighborhoods.

BLOOD LEAD CONCENTRATION
(UG/DL)

THE TASK

In disadvantaged neighborhoods children are screen for lead poisoning.  They get their fingers pricked for a blood lead test.

The blood tests are the first step in preventing what could be terrible consequences for many of these children later in their lives.

·       Does Lead poisoning causes learning disabilities, developmental delays and brain damage?

·        To find the answer, you will research lead poisoning; submit 5 PowerPoint slides and a research paper.

You will be doing the following:

·       Research lead poisoning.

·        5 PowerPoint slides, on lead poisoning.

·       Write a 3-5 pages condensed report of your findings.

·       Present your group’s slide show to the class.

·       Use the Public Policy Analyst worksheets to conduct your research.

THE PROCESS

1.    You will use the Public Policy steps for your worksheets:

http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/tips/welcome.html

2.   You will be assigned to a group of 3 students.

3.    Each group will elect a group leader, reporter and secretary.  Note: these titles will be rotated within the group.

4.   Every group will investigate five of the websites listed below.

5.   Each group is responsible for 5 PowerPoint slides.

6.     Each group is to select a website from the resources page for their group work.

CONCLUSION:

As results of your research, you are now a public advocate on lead poisoning and are aware of an important community problem, facing many babies and toddlers in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Is there evidence that lead pollution from various sources causes learning disabilities, developmental delays and brain damage in exposed individuals?

How can lead poisoning be prevented?
