TEEN PREGNANCY

A WEBQUEST

PREPARED BY:  Linda Fracentese

Harry S Truman High School

INTRODUCTION

“Did you hear about Janine?  She quit school because she’s pregnant.  Her boyfriend left her; now she has to support this baby.  I heard LaToya is also pregnant.   She’s having trouble passing her classes because she’s out so often”.  “ Nadia was sent to live with an aunt until her baby is born. She had to drop out of school.”  Jermaine has to get a job to support his new son.  He has to quit school.”   How often have you heard stories like these?

The United States has the highest teenage pregnancy rate of all developed countries.  About 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year; 95% of those pregnancies are unintended, and almost one third end in abortions.   High rates of teen pregnancy burden not only teenagers but also their children, families, and communities, while imposing large costs on taxpayers as well.

You have been asked to develop policies to help students become aware of the problems caused by teen pregnancy and to help prevent the increase of teen pregnancy among your classmates.

TASK

Your task will be to develop a presentation using PowerPoint to bring awareness of the issue to fellow students and to develop policies to reduce pregnancy among the students in your school.

PROCESS

You will be assigned into groups. Each group will research this topic using the Internet, develop an oral presentation including a PowerPoint presentation of at least 6 slides.

Each student will be assigned a specific task.  One student will do the research, one will make the PowerPoint slides, and one student will make the oral presentation.  Be sure to use the six- step PPA process below.

1.      What is the problem?

2.      Where is the evidence?

3.      What are the causes?

4.      What is the existing policy?

5.      What policies can you create to correct the problem?

6.      What is the best policy to correct the problem?
