INTRODUCTION
On
the eve of the American Revolution, Thomas Jefferson wrote these famous words
in

hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they
are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these
are Life,
Soon after independence, these famous words were written in the preamble
of our constitution.
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

TASK
The common myth has been that blacks have contributed little to the expansion of American greatness and democracy. In honor or protest of Black History Month, you have been selected to take a trip back in time and re-live the African-American experience. Your task is to explain to us the traumas and triumphs of blacks, beginning with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade; slavery itself, the Emancipation and the Reconstruction periods, the Great Migration of 1917, the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement, and the post-Civil Rights era. From the slave trade to the civil war, the problem is obviously slavery and finding means of abolishing this social and economic system. From the emancipation to the turn of the 20th century, the problem is obviously the black inability to rehabilitate itself from the shameful legacy of slavery and finding means of becoming self-sufficient and reliant. From the migration to the North to the Harlem Renaissance, the problem is obviously the black inability to break the racial barrier and give credence and valor to black culture and gain the acceptance of the white dominant culture. During the Civil Rights Movement, the problem is obviously the violation of black civil rights. And during the post-Civil Rights era the problem is obviously that of full integration- such as police brutality for instance.

You may choose any political figure, artist, educator, scientist, activist, writer, or in short, any African-American who has contributed to a more equitable America from the time periods mentioned above, or a combination of any of these figures and time periods, to paint a truer picture of the African-American influence and contribution to America. We are only interested in that figure in the context of the social problem of the time period you have chosen. For example- if you choose to write about Harriet Tubman- you would not write about her personal life- but you would write about her only the context of slaves trying to gain their freedom and her contribution to solving this problem. You must create a 7-slide Power Point Presentation and write a 10 page report to show your subjects’ accomplishments, the context in which your subject achieved his/her accomplishments, the impact of the accomplishment(s), and the problems faced and transcended by your subject. You must use the 6-step public policy approach. Your first six slides must follow the approach below, and the seventh slide must list the names of your participants and your sources. Follow these steps for your analysis.
1. Define and describe the problem as it existed in your chosen time period (social conditions, players, public policies, and political atmosphere)
2. Gather evidence for this problem and how has it changed today.
3. Identify the causes for this problem, besides just the legacy of slavery.
4. Describe and evaluate the past public policies and the policies of today for this problem.
5. Develop alternative policies and solutions that would potentially eradicate this problem.
6. Select the best public policy solution for this problem then and today.
PROCESS
