Global Warming

Introduction:

Global warming is a worldwide problem. Earth’s atmosphere traps some of the heat that would normally radiate into space. The result is that Earth’s average temperature is rising. Recently, lawmakers have taken notice of this global epidemic and are devising policies which will reduce long term affects of the changing climate. In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly created the Intergovernmental Negotiate, a treaty on global warming or climate change. The goal of this web quest is to analyze current policies in order to develop policies that will improve the Earth's atmosphere and decrease global warming.

Task:

Global warming is a growing problem.  You are an environmentalist and you want to find the best solution for this problem by concentrating on how the U.S is affected by global warming.  To accomplish your goal, you have to use the 6-step public policy approach to write a report and oral presentation.

  1. Determine the nature of the problem of global warming and the effects it would have on the U.S.
  2. Research and collect data on the climate and temperatures of the U.S.
  3. Identify the causes of global warming.
  4. Find the policies taken by the U.S. government to prevent global warming from becoming a greater threat to our society.
  5. Create a policy so that you can help the government to save the place where you live from the effects of global warming.
  6. Provide an explanation for the best policy to be used in order to prevent global warming.

Process:

1.      Students will break into groups of 3.

2.      Use the websites to find information about Global warming.

3.      Discuss in the group policies taken by the government to prevent Global warming.

4.      Use the information to create a new public policy.

5.      Present the new policy to the other groups.

Conclusion:

By researching global warming using different websites, students will be able to learn how policies devised by the government can prevent global warming from harming the society in which they live in.  In doing so, they can also create their own policies to help save their environment from the harmful effects of global warming.
