Environmental Issues on the Slide

            Webquest #2  Power Point

          P. Carter

Truman High School

2002 Lexus SC 430

Introduction:      You have just purchased a new $1000. car stereo system for your Lex.  You offer to drive your “homies” around to show them what your car stereo “can do.”  The bass is so loud the car shakes and everything near it shakes until a police car pulls up behind you and proceeds to write you a ticket for making so much noise.  You are furious.  How can the government (police) tell you how loud to play your stereo…after all, you spent good money on it and should be able to play it as loud as you want.

Task:         This scenario is based on the environmental issue of Noise Pollution.  And the TIPS Public Policy Analyst can be used as a guide to creating a Power Point presentation about this Public problem and those Public problems that you individually explore.

You will each create a 6-10 slide power point presentation that assimilates the 6 steps of a Public Policy Analyst and creatively projects your acquired knowledge and your feelings on the subject.

Process:      Before beginning your power point you should create a story board as a rough draft or a template as to where you want to go.   In each of these slides on paper, brainstorm what you would like to see there, what you would like it to say, and how you would like it to progress.

Go to the TIPS Webpage www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/tips/welcome.html

and find the six steps for analyzing Public Policies.

·        Think of how these six steps can be presented in your power point presentation of your environmental issue.

·        The six steps are as follows… (see TIPS Webpage- www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/tips/welcome.html):

1.      What is the problem?  http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet1.html

In my scenario, the problem was noise pollution.

2.      Where is the evidence? http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet2.html

Use the internet to find proof that this is a problem.  Show proof that the problem does actually exist.

3.      What are the causes of your problem? http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet3.html  In my scenario, the cause of noise pollution is continuous, loud noises that could damage the hearing of individuals.

4.      Search the Internet to find the existing policy handed down by the government on your topic.  http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet4.html

5.      What policies can you create to correct the problem?  http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet5.html

6.      Come up with what you feel would be the best policy to correct the problem.  http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/worksheet6.html

Once you have direction, use Microsoft Power Point, blank slides, text box, clip art, backgrounds, internet photos, animation and any other tools that are available to complete a presentation that is clear, concise, colorfully animated and flowing from beginning to end while incorporating the 6 steps previously mentioned.

Evaluation:     Your presentation will be graded on your effectiveness and creativity in presenting your information through this media.

Conclusion:            Upon completion of this assignment, students will have a deeper understanding of some of the environmental issues around them, how the government controls these issues and how they might help to control these same issues.

They will also gain the skills to create a power point presentation, which will give them a tangible, positive learning experience, from which they can build academically and in future careers.
