The Catholic Reformation

Introduction:

As the Protestants gain power and prestige among the people of Europe during the Reformation, the Catholic Church recognizes the need to reform some of their outdated practices to stop the flood of Catholics converting. The most elite of the intellectual minds of Europe have been invited to gather in Rome to research solutions and suggest reforms in the Church. You are one of these intellectuals.

Task:

Every student will be assigned one of three major policies used by the Church to stem the tide of converts: The order of Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent.

Having covered the first three steps of the PPA, your task is to use the internet search engines and suggested web sites below to summarize the assigned policy in one or two sentences and give three examples or details that back up your summary.

Then, you will write an impassioned plea for the pope to instill your method.

Process

Day 1

After receiving your assigned policy, use a search engine to get a feel for what it actually was. Fill in the first box on your daily log with a description IN YOUR OWN WORDS. In your second box fill in whether it was a success or a failure.

Day 2

Using your day 2 log find more information on your policy, specifically details that back up the summary you have formulated. Take notes on information you have found. Come into class tomorrow with your summary/evidence sheet filled out completely.

Day 3

Using your summary/evidence sheet, write a plea to the pope. Explain to him that your policy is worth implementing for the Church. Include the details and evidence you have accumulated the previous two days. The tricky part will be convincing the pope to use your policy if you don’t believe it is a valid policy based on your research. No matter. Convince him this policy works!

Day 4

You will be seated in groups according to your different policy. In a three person group there will be an advocate of the Jesuits, the Council of Trent, and of the Inquisition. Thinking outside of the box, you will compile a three way Venn Diagram that include the similarities and differences of your policies. Don’t just list the obvious! Below your diagram, create a conclusion about your policies.
