Introduction: In the past few years, shockingly violent acts carried out by young people have figured promently in newspaper headlines.  On the morning of May 9,1995, a homeless man in New York City was burned alive by five youths, ranging in age from twelve to nineteen.  Such stories have added to the general publics fear of a rising tide of violence among today’s youth. In this activity you will examine the different sides of this debate as well as evaluate the different types of intervention and modes of punishment.

 

Task 1   Students will be able to use the Internet and articles provided to examine to provide evidence that this is a problem.

 

Task 2   Students will identify the current public policy be able to evaluate the different types of interventions.

 

Task 3   Students will   compose a list of alternative interventions and evaluate their feasibility and effectiveness.

 

Task 4     Students will create a poll to compare results with those

                        Students from Jane Addams.
