Do You Think You Can Say Whatever You Want?

Introduction:

Often students believe they can say whatever they want because they believe their parents have allowed them such rights.  Through this Webquest, students will be able to understand what are their rights. Students will learn about the Tinker v. Des Moines Case.  Students will research its implications on our society.

 

 

Task:

1.      You and another student will act out a short dialogue in front of the class.

2.      The class will complete a graphic organizer about “freedom of speech”.

3.      You will state what problem does freedom of speech cause in our society.

4.      You will independently complete Handout 1a

5.      You will observe Handout 1b-Cartoon

6.      You will identify anything related to freedom of speech or freedom of the press.

7.      You will be broken into groups to work on the case-Tinker v. Des Moines.

8.      Your group will research a selected case using the Internet.

9.      You will give your interpretation in a power presentation.

 

 

Process:

1.      The teacher will give students a short skit about students disrespecting each other to act out in front of the class.  The skit ends when one of the students says “It is my mouth I can say whatever I want!”

2.      At that moment the teacher will stop the skit and ask the class “Is the student right”?  “Can people say anything they want?”

3.      The teacher will listen to the student’s responses.

4.      The teacher will direct the students to the board where the words “FREEDOM OF SPEECH” will be written.  The teacher will ask what do you think it means.

5.      The teacher will elicit the answers from students.

6.      The teacher will ask what problems do freedom of speech cause?

7.      The teacher will give handout 1a, a survey, to complete.

8.      The teacher will then direct the students to look at handout 1b on an LCD projector.

9.      The teacher will ask the students can anyone identify anything that can be related to freedom of speech.

10.  Students will be broken into groups to research Tinker v. Des Moines using the TIPS website.

11.  Students will create a presentation using Internet research.

After completing this webquest, you will have a greater understanding of what is “freedom of speech”.  You will be able to analysis the Tinker v. Des Moines case and how it has affected our society.
