Religion, in our school?

Introduction:

Your sitting in class when all of a sudden over the P.A. system the principal says:

“Attention all students school will now hold a daily prayer during the beginning of second period every day.  This is a non-denominational, non-compulsory prayer meaning that it favors no religion and you do not have to say it if you don’t want to.  This was voted on by members of the student body and the faculty last week and won overwhelming support.  You wanted it now you have it.  Thank you and have a nice day.”

Your immediate reaction is…

Task:

·        As a student you must first decide if you are for or against this new prayer in school.

·        Then you must find at least 2 legal precedents (court cases) to back up your opinion.

·        Use at least 1 current events to bolster your legal precedents.

·        Create a 60 second presentation (about 1 typed page) where you defend your position in front of your classmates.

·        Everything will be handed in and graded

Process:

·        On Microsoft word type you opinion in a paragraph.  This will be the introduction to your presentation.

·        Find court cases that back up your argument.  Briefly discuss the facts of the cases and the outcome.  Remember to link these cases to your opinion (opening paragraph).

·        Find current events that back up your opinion.  For example the recent school shootings at Columbine etc. make it necessary to have prayer in school to prevent these incidents from happening again.

·        Conclude your presentation by summarizing your opinion.
