A Web Quest for English 1

 A Critical Analysis and Evaluation of Chief Joseph’s Speeches

         INTRODUCTION

 

 

You will be using your computer to travel back in time.  The Internet will help to transport you to the days when the different American Indian tribes existed in the U.S.  Your mission is to research and document the treatment of the American Indian in this country.  Your focus should be on Chief Joseph’s, a Nez Perce Indian leader, point of view.  Your work will help illustrate how this social problem, the treatment of the American Indian, could have been avoided.

You will have to write a 2-page essay that explains your three original critical lens or quotations based on the treatment of the American Indian.  Your essay must follow all the guidelines below:

 

1.      Type 2 pages (font size 12, “Times New Roman”, 1.5 spacing)

2.      Follow the 6–step public policy approach

3.      Write in paragraphs

4.      Document all your research with “end notes”

5.      Use the M.L.A. research paper style for endnotes, style, and citation of Internet sites (see examples)

6.      USE YOUR OWN WORDS!  COPYING WORD FOR WORD WILL EQUAL A 0%

 

 

THE 6-STEP PUBLIC POLICY APPROACH

 

1.        The social problem is the treatment of the American Indian in the U.S.

2.        Gather evidence of this problem by reading through the sites in the “resources” section.

3.        Identify the causes of this problem by reading through the sites provided.

4.        Describe and evaluate past public policies regarding this problem.

5.        Create your own three original public policies regarding this problem.

6.        Select one of your three original public policies that would address this problem.  Use the effectiveness/feasibility matrix.

=     Answer all the research questions below by reading through the Internet sites in the “Resources” section of this web quest.

=     Complete all 6 public policy analysis work sheets by reading through the Internet sites provided.

=     Create one critical lens statement based on any 3 public policy analysis steps.

=     Explain each of your 3 original critical lens statements in great detail.  You must use your own words.  USE YOUR OWN WORDS!

=     Write a 2-page essay based on your 3 critical lens statements and your explanations of each statement.

=     Use M.S. Word to type your essay M.L.A. style.

=     Your third page is a “Works Cited” page that lists at least 5 Internet sites from the “Resources” section.

Your 2-page essay will be worth 300 points.  The rubric on the following page will describe how your essay will be judged.  The following guidelines illustrate how you can score the maximum amount of points.

 

     Create 3 critical lens statements based on any of the three work sheets you completed.

     A critical lens statement is a 1-3 sentence statement that is original and clearly expresses a viewpoint from which each of the 6 steps of the public policy analysis may be interpreted.

     Explain each of your 3 original critical lens statements with clear details and reasons.

     Your essay must be written in paragraphs.

     Follow the M.L.A. style when typing your essay and the third page or the “Works Cited” page.

     Your three critical lens statements must be written in your own words.  Your explanation should include your own words and documented facts from your research.

            A critical lens that I created based on step one or the problem is: “Inner strength is proven when one is faced with death or war.”  This critical lens is describing how new settlers took their land away from them and fought battles with them.  Chief Joseph’s surrender speech at Bears Paw Battle in 1877, describes how the “white man” robbed them of their land and their food (“Chief Joseph’s Surrender Speech at Bears Paw Battle, October 5, 1877).
