JANE EYRE: A CHILD IN CRISIS

A STUDY OF CHILD ABUSE and NEGLECT IN THE 21ST CENTURY AND IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND

JNEY95014

“My head still ached and bled with the blow and fall I had received: no one had reproved John for wantonly striking me…” from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

INTRODUCTION

You have the privilege of using a “time machine” and a “human teleporter.”  You will be using the time machine to travel back in time to Victorian England.  Your mission is to study the treatment of children during this period in England.   You will use the “human teleporter” to bring back a child who has been abused.  This child’s name is “Jane Eyre.”  You will try to help this abused child by introducing her to the variety of agencies that are available to children in the 21st century in the United States.  Keep in mind that this little girl is new to our culture, our era, and our view of child abuse.  Your humanitarian actions will illustrate a rise in abuse and neglect of children of both genders in the United States.

TASK

You will have to create a seven slide Power Point Presentation.  Your slide show must focus on the problem of child abuse during Victorian England as seen through the eyes of Bronte’s Jane Eyre and on the ways our modern day American society can help this child (or any child of any gender).  You will have to use the 6-step public policy approach.  Your slide must have 6 slides that follow the approach below and one slide that list the credits (names of participants and sources).  This type of analysis includes all of the following steps:

1.     Define and describe the problem as it existed in Victorian England and in today’s society (social conditions, players, and public policies)

2.     Gather evidence for this problem as it existed in Victorian England and as it exists in today’s society

3.     Identify the causes for this problem during Victorian England and in today’s society

4.     Describe and evaluate the past public policies (in Victorian England) and the present day American public policies regarding the problem

5.     Develop alternative policies that would address the problem, as it exists today in the United States and in Victorian England.

6.    Select the best public policy/solution for this modern American and Victorian England problem.

PROCESS

Refer to the following guidelines for the completion of your 7-slide Power Point Presentation.

Guidelines

Ř  Research the sources listed below in order to respond to all the following questions

Ř  Use the 6-step public policy analysis work sheets before creating ‘slide boards’ for your 7-slide Power Point Presentation

http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/plegal/TIPS/welcome.html

Ř  After you complete your six worksheets, begin creating a first draft of your 7 slide boards on the paper provided

Ř  Create a 7-slide Power Point presentation that focuses on your findings as a result of the six steps public policy analysis approach

Ř  Submit a printed copy of your 7-slide Power Point approach

Ř  Present your slide show to our class on your scheduled appointment

  2. Cite 5 specific quotations that demonstrate how Jane Eyre coped with the abuse as a child (provide page numbers).
  3. Create a list of the individuals who had perpetrated the abuse on Jane Eyre.  Explain how and why they were abusive to this young girl.
  4. Who wrote this novel?
  5. Describe the author as a person and as a writer.
  6. List 20 facts concerning the abusive treatment of children in during Victorian England.

  11. Explain these agencies’ missions.
  12. Describe the children’s agencies that were available to Jane Eyre during the English Victorian era.
  13. How would these agencies help Jane if she were living in our contemporary American society?
  14. How would Jane Eyre compare and contrast the mistreatment of children in Victorian England to the maltreatment of children in today’s American society?

EVALUATION

You will be judged on the quality of your Power Point slide show and your oral presentation.  The guidelines below have been created to give you a clear understanding of what is expected.  Your own originality and creativity counts for a large part of your slide show.  Allow your own creativity to shine through both your slide show and your oral presentation!

Guidelines for your Power Point Presentation

Ř  All your 7 slides must be original.

Ř  Your slide show must consist of 6 slides and 1 credits slide (no more and no less than seven slides will be accepted).

Ř  Your first six slides must focus on the 6-step public policy approach

www.maxwell,syr.edu/plegal/tips/welcome.html

Ř  Your seventh slide or the “credits slide” must contain your name, the class, and a list of the sources that you used in the first six slides (MLA style).

Ř  You must also submit the “slide boards.”  These are the printed copies of your seven slides.

Ř  You will have to present your slide show in front of the class on a scheduled date and time.

Ř  Your oral presentation must be a dynamic talk that enhances your slide show.  Reading the slides to the class will result in automatic failure.

Ř  Your slide show must have pictures from “Clip Art” and pictures that you downloaded from the Internet.

Ř  Each slide must use color in the background and in the font.

Ř  At least one slide must use “Word Art.”
